How large was your tuxedo cat? I have one that just went missing two nights ago but he is 25lbs and I’m wondering if it’s possible for a coyote to carry him off since he was so large.

I'm sorry to hear that Thelma is missing. Unfortunately, I can't make an informed guess on what happened to her without a lot more information. If you are interested, I do offer phone consultations: https://lostpetresearch.com/services/lost-cat-consultation/. You can also find many low cost and free lost cat recovery resources in the store: https://lostpetresearch.com/store/. Definitely, do not give up hope without doing a thorough search, effective advertising and a good understanding of lost cat behavior.

In reply to <a href="https://lostpetresearch.com/2011/01/observations-of-coyote-predation-on-cats/#comment-108840">Barb</a>.

One night I was.walking and noticed what I thought was a dog running towards me. As I got closer I saw it was a coyote with a cat in its mouth. It was just trotting a long carrying this 10 pound cat in its jaws like it was nothing. I had just that feeling eek buried what body parts I could find of my own cat who was killed by a coyote. I was still very upset and this cat it had was Orange just like mine. So without thinking about it I jumped in front of it when it was about 10 feet away and in a deep sort of growly voice said. “Drop it!” At the same time I jumped towards it and made a loud stomp with my feet .the coyote dropped the cat on the street and ran over to the sidewalk and was wtching me. I yellled at it to get lost and stomped my foot at it again. It took of further but I’m sure it was was still watching me. I thought now what are you going to do smart girl? There’s a headless cat on the ground. I just didn’t want this coyote consuming a cat so it was trash day and there was an empty trash can I picked up the cat by the tail and dropped it in the container. A couple of days later I noticed a sign for a lost Orange female cat. I called the number and told the lady about what had happened. She lived about half a mile from where I saw the coyote. My cat was consumed right behind our back fence. I think they will take there prey wherever it’s safe to eat it away from humans especially. My cats fur was left in a pile so I’m pretty sure your kitty was a victim of a coyote like mine was and for whatever reason the coyote carried your cat for quite a distance. Maybe something g scared it and it dropped the cat. But it being de furred makes me think that’s what happened. I’m sorry for your loss.

Raccoons came around my house they totally ignored the cats but did eat the cat kibble. Raccoons don’t feed on cats. Coyotes do . Cats are part of their regular diet if they live where there are cats.

My cat has been missing since last Tuesday. A neighbor found lots of fur clumps on his porch that could be my cats'. His house backs to a green area where there are lots of bunnies that attract predictors like coyotes. Further down, across a street is another area where I found coyote scat. How can I know whether the fur he found belongs to my cat and whether she was killed or just ran away? I have some of the fur that could be analyzed. Is there a place that does DNA analysis? Where can I get a kit to detect blood?

I'm sorry to hear that your cat is missing. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for coyotes to consume an entire cat including the feet. I would not rule out that a coyote might accidentally consume a single claw during an altercation, though I wouldn't think it's a common occurrence. If you want to look into services to help determine if the scat remains are your cat, there is some information here: https://lostpetresearch.com/lost-pet-resources/forensic-investigations/.

Are the cat’s claws usually in relation to cats who have been killed or those who struggled and maybe successfully made it away? I was hoping for the latter as we found a claw of my cat in coyote scat, but if it’s a common occurrence then I would think that coyotes simply eat those while eating the rest of the remains. Thanks
