I had a cat who was exclusively indoors but had had some outdoor experience when he was younger (less than 3 years old). On two occasions he got outside, as he was prone to do, and found within a few hundred yards of home after less than an hour of searching. The first time was from our apartment. I believe he followed the bushes next to the buildings that were situated around a large courtyard. The second time was from our house in a different location. This time I found him in a storm drain. What you may find interesting is that both times, I found him by calling his name, and he started crying like a baby! When he was in the storm drain, I was calling him from my car with the windows down. I could hear him cry over the sound of the car AND the rain. Also, both times he came right to me as soon as I got close, and never attempted to run away from me. Just thought you might be interested. :)
